Infantry Units

Grenadiers

These soldiers were trained to throw grenades. They were introduced in XVII and early XVIII century. Definitely, they were the elite, the best infantry. The most physically strong and stalwart people were recruited to these forces. Their equipment comprised a musket with bayonet, a sword, and a few grenades. They could also handle a hand mortar. These mortars were used mainly for shelling enemy fortifications. While firing, grenadiers rested a mortar club against the ground or a tree trunk. Grenadier formations were much like that of musketeers - they fell in three files. In case of a cavalry threat they formed a square. Their equipment also was similar to that of musketeers.
